Snoring and Sleep Apnea
You can’t have a productive day if you don’t get a good night’s sleep. Trust Waters ENT Sinus & Allergy to help you sleep better at night so you awake rested and refreshed. Sleep-related problems can happen at any age. We diagnose and treat a wide range of sleep-related disorders.
During the potty training years, its not uncommon for children to wet the bed. However, after the age of five, children should be dry at night. Bedwetting at this age can be a symptom of a sleep-related breathing disorder.
Snoring is caused by a vibration of the uvula and soft palate. The throat and jaw relax when we sleep, and this can lead to snoring. The most common causes of snoring are:
- Sinus infection
- Deviated septum
- Tonsils and adenoids (primarily children)
Snoring keeps you and those around you from sleeping well. Don’t let snoring interfere with sleep or relationships.
Snoring can be a symptom of sleep apnea. This is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition. Sleep apnea causes the sleeper to stop breathing periodically during sleep because of a collapsed airway. Untreated sleep apnea can lead to heart attack, stroke, irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure and heart disease. Correcting any obstruction and preventing the airway from collapse can stop sleep apnea.
If you have other medical problems, obstructive breathing at night can make them worse. Failure to get a good night’s rest can lead to poor work performance. For machinery operators or drivers, sleep problems can increase your risk of injury on the job. Snoring can strain relationships and threaten intimacy.
Sleep studies and addressing the obstruction with medication, surgery or continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) can resolve snoring or sleep apnea so everyone in the house sleeps better.
